Ahrex - Shannon's Terror - tied by Billy Scott
Coastal flyfishing for sea run brown trout along the coasts in Scandinavia is a big thing, and the fishing is apparently also quite good along the coastal areas in both United Kingdom, Ireland and Scotland. A pattern that has gained quite a reputation is the Shannon’s Terror - a baitfish imitation invented by Scottish flyfisher and flytyer Billy Scott. Named after his daughter and kept a “secret” for a period due to its effectivity, but slowly the pattern got “leaked” and spread out to fishermen around the world, and now is a well known and effective pattern for imitating sandeels and other baitfish. We have visited and fished with Billy Scott and during the stay we did this video of him demonstrating his effective pattern.

Ahrex - Superpuppan - by Håkan Karsnäser
Переглядів 59119 годин тому
Superpuppan is originally one of Swedish Lennart Bergqvist's classics, tied to imitate caddisflies that have risen to the surface and are on their way to land to hatch. The fly can be fished deaddrift or with small strips to allow it to head towards land while fishing. If there are hatching natural caddisflies, it will easily imitate the original, otherwise it is often a good idea to fish the f...
Ahrex - Red Abbey - tied by Håkan Karsnäser
Переглядів 61214 днів тому
The classic salmon flies with whole featherwings or married wings were time-consuming and complicated to tie. Gradually, the wings were replaced by hairwings, and one of the first modern hair-winged salmon flies is believed to be the Red Abbey. It is unclear who is the originator of the fly, but A.S. Trude is one of the first to be credited for it. The combination of the red and brown colors ha...
Ahrex - Hi-Vis Parachute Mayfly - by Håkan Karsnäser
Переглядів 42121 день тому
This parachute pattern is a variation of the famous Klinkhåmer, originally invented by dutch flytyer and flyfisher Hans Van Klinken and the pattern has proven its worth during the last 40 years all over the world. In this version of the original fly, our own Håkan Karsnäser is demonstrating the tying of the parachute fly using a hackle in a high visible coolor. The combination of the white wing...

If you need to fill up your flybox with an effective dry-fly patterns of mayflies, have a look at this fine pattern - tied only with a few hackle-fibres and two grizzlyhackles. We have our own Håkan Karsnäser to demonstrate the tying of a simple mayfly - this fly is originally tied by the skilled swedish flytyer, flyfisher and author on several books Johan Klingenberg, and is one of Håkans favo...

A few materials and a wing that can give the characteristic triangular profile and make the fly super buoyant is the keywords behind this fine caddis imitation, which we have had our Swedish friend Håkan Karsnäser to demonstrate the tying of. When the caddis flies are hatching, the fish in both running and still-water can rarely resist a well-presented imitation. The fly should float well and h...
Ahrex - Beiss Original - tied by Stefan Fiskeshoppen

The name “beiss-fly” is well-known to most anglers in Scandinavia and especially the famous river Mörrum in the southern part of Sweden. In the humus-colored rivers this fly is an absolute must-have with its ginger, olive and black colors that has fooled a big amount of salmon and seatrouts. Originally invented by local flyfisher Ulf Sill who developed the technique of making the wing in severa...
Ahrex - Adult Yellow Sally Stonefly - by Håkan Karsnäser
Переглядів 918Місяць тому
The massive stonefly hatches from the US, especially Montana, are well known. And seeing the shucks from them it’s no wonder that they can bring even the biggest trout to the surface. Depending on where you live, stonefly imitations can be a must-to-have in the box or a nice-to-have. In Montana it is a must have, in Scandinavia, nice-to-have. In Scandinavia we do have a quite a few species and ...

The salmon season is well underway and the dream of the big shiny Atlantic salmon can give salmon fishermen many sleepless nights. The fly boxes are full and the gear is top-trimmed when the rivers open up after the long winter. In the early fishing, salmon can be few in numbers and a lot of water must be covered. A type of fly that has proven effective in fast-flowing water is long-winged flie...
Ahrex - Macabi Høtyven - by Jesper Lindquist Andersen
Переглядів 9882 місяці тому
Along the coasts of Scandinavia, creative fly tyers repeatedly come up with imitations of shrimp that turn out to be super popular and effective at fooling the coastal sea run brown trout. One of the newer "classics" is Troels Holstein Kaas “Høtyven” - the combination of tan/ginger colours and the vibrant orange rubber legs has proven superior at the end of the leader over and over again. In th...

This small simple feathewinged salmon fly is probably one of the most well-known salmon flies of the Simple Strip Wing family. Along with another classic, the March Brown, it was the favorite flies of the legend A. H. Wood, who is said to be the father of floating-line salmon fishing. And with 3,540 salmon caught between 1913 and his death in 1934 - most catches were on the Cairnton beat on the...

We once again had the pleasure of having our friend Casper Hansen behind the vise to demonstrate his bid on one of the most classic shrimp patterns. the Ally´s Shrimp is originally by Scottish flytyer Ally Gowans - but this time in Casper ties it in a modern tube version. Casper says about the fly himself “For many years I thought that the Ally Shrimp was a little difficult to tie in a nice ver...

In ancient times, sea trout fishing in the rivers was done with sinkinglines and wetflies. That's how it was done, and several well-meaning and instructive books have been written on the subject. Some of the flies are even referred to as classic Danish sea trout flies today. However, sea trout are easily spooked fish by nature, and in the river they often move under cover of darkness. This obvi...
Ahrex - Jig Nymph - by Håkan Karsnäser
Переглядів 6333 місяці тому
There is quite nothing more effective than a deep-fished nymph for the big trouts and grayling in the streams and rivers. But the technique of small heavy nymphs tied and fished on small jig hooks offers some additional advantages compared to the traditional nymph hooks. The hook tip, which will automatically turn upwards, ensures that the hook will not get stuck as often, so you can fish deepe...

In the late eighties, the local flyfisher and flytyer along the banks of the famous river Mörrum Lars Terkildsen tied a bunch of the famous Ullsocken flies in a new mixture of ginger, brown, and orange - today known as the colour Mörrum Orange or Mörrum Ginger. The body of the flies were tied with herls from a peacock eye feather, which turns into a sort of nice bronze in the humus-coloured wat...

Hi John I fish them with a free hanging hook. Just a bit of soft rubber tube over the knot and hook eye and then let it swing free - works great on these long winged flies and hooks the fish really good.

I wonder if we fly tyers must start to think more deeply about the material we select for the flies we tie. The jungle cock is threatened and many times protected. In lots of countries, they are protected and not open for import/export. Why do we fly tyers use materials that do not affect fishing besides for the person who ties the fly? Professional fly tyer should know, act, and be The Front Person for the rest of us.
